All the thoughts we grab desperately hold of, those self-definitions, old stories, future plans, fears, etc., are like butterflies caught in some butterfly net that we can’t let go of.
So here’s an idea: let’s cut the net!
Someone asked the sage Nisargadatta Maharaj how to do this, and he replied…
“Fearlessness comes by itself, when you see that there is nothing to be afraid of. When you walk in a crowded street, you just bypass people. Some you see, some you just glance at, but you do not stop. It is the stopping that creates the bottleneck. Keep moving! Disregard names and shapes, don’t be attached to them; your attachment is your bondage.”
So we walk through the thoughts, as if they were people on a crowded street that we’re completely disinterested in. We let them appear and disappear as they like. We cut the net, and the butterflies can fly around freely.
In so doing, we become Fearless.
